Think your bathroom has seen better days?
Seeing little specks of mould?
Wondering why it keeps happening?
Here are 3 possible causes of mould growth in bathrooms.
Lack of Ventilation
When you’re in your shower next, wander your eyes around the room and you will most likely see a room filled with steam & condensation on the walls. Regular presence of moisture after each shower has a high potential to cause mould and mildew to start growing. To offset your long & hot showers (especially in the winter), turn on the exhaust fan during and after showers and leave a slight gap in the door and windows to allow extra ventilation.
Multiple Wet Spots
As the bathroom has pretty much the most plumbing fixtures out of all the rooms in your home, these rooms will have the most amount of wet spots! Eliminate any possible wet areas by inspecting plumbing & fixture leaks regularly, as it is easy for some to go unnoticed. Some tips include cleaning fixtures on a bi-weekly basis, have an absorbent floor mat and avoid leaving wet towels on the floor.
Damaged Grout
Tiles (especially those in the shower) are constantly exposed to moisture as well as direct water contact. Like anything, overtime the grout holding these tiles together deteriorates, which promotes the growth of mould. It’s important that grout is replenished on a regular basis (6 months or so), otherwise you could end up with damaged tiles and a mould growth.
Mould growth is not welcome and does not have to be a regular occurrence in your home.
If you keep an eye out for these top 3 causes and change some bathroom habits, you are on your way to preventing mould growth in your bathroom!
