Overflow Relief Gully (ORG)
If you have a blocked drain at your property, there’s a high chance you have a blocked overflow relief gully (ORG).
An ORG is a drain like fitting located outside the home. They are designed to release sewage overflow away from your property and are required in all Australian properties.
How does it work?
An ORG is fitted at a depth lower than any other waste outlet at the property to help prevent blockages at your property. If a sewer blockage occurs at your property, the ORG fitting should pop off to release the pressure and direct sewage away. It’s important to inspect your ORG often to ensure it’s not full of water or covered up.
What does it look like?
The shape and design of ORG’s is often varied. Generally, ORG’s are between 100-150mm in diameter and are either made of plastic or metal alloy.
Why don’t some homes have ORG’s and why are their different models?
Most properties constructed after 1976 have an ORG installed. Buildings constructed before this time will not have an ORG, unless additional work has been completed. As knowledgeable Melbourne Plumbers, we strongly recommend getting one installed to prevent sewer blockages at your property.
Ensure your ORG is not:
- Covered by landscaping
- Covered by an object
- Unable to release pressure if corroded
Who can install an ORG?
Any licensed plumber should be able to make an assessment of your ORG and provide recommendations. In some cases, an ORG may required replacement or just a minor alteration to the fitting.
